Our Purpose
Nedbank is a purpose-driven organisation that leverages its financial expertise to do good, and this purpose guides its business strategy, behaviours, and short- and long-term actions.
Our purpose is the overarching reason we exist. Our purpose connects and unites us. It’s how we create value, the 1 constant in a world of change. It focuses our attention and channels our efforts. Our purpose defines how we see our role in society – a catalyst for growth and an unstoppable force for good. We can’t be a successful business in an unsuccessful society, and we know that purpose-led business is good business.
We make tough decisions to balance short-term profit with long-term value. We have always been the ‘green bank’ and our commitment to our purpose, people and planet is our key differentiator. We resolutely commit to a green economy and a thriving, vibrant, healthy, and sustainable African future. Our purpose directs our strategy and decision-making, resulting in an optimal balance between long-term value creation and short-term results.
Our vision
To be the most-admired financial services provider in Africa by our employees, clients, shareholders, regulators and society.
Our vision describes what we want our future to look like. It implies that we will continue to build our franchise in South Africa, while expanding into the rest of the African continent. We want to be most admired by our key stakeholders. Without passionate and motivated employees, we will not be able to attract and retain the clients that are key to the delivery of sustainable profits for our shareholders.
As a bank we operate in a regulated environment, and we also aim to be admired by our regulators. Lastly, as a bank we can play a major part in our communities and, as the green bank, we are a strong advocate and influencer on environmental matters.

Our values are the principles that guide us. Along with our 7 culture principles, ‘The Nedbank Way’, it supports us achieving our strategic ambitions. The Nedbank Way describes our required culture and what we need to shift towards.

- Learn to grow
Our strategy, represented by strategic value drivers and strategic value unlocks, provides a clear framework of where we need to focus as a purpose-led organisation and what we need to do to meet our medium- and long-term targets to create value for our shareholders and other stakeholders.
Our strategic value drivers
Through our strategy we seek to grow revenue faster than expenses and increase levels of productivity, while maintaining world-class risk and capital management metrics to meet our medium- and long-term targets.
Growth
To grow faster, we will focus on gaining profitable market share in key lending categories, increase our share of main-banked clients and related transactional deposits, and deliver market-leading client experiences to attract new clients and deepen our share of wallet among existing clients. We also look to unlock new growth opportunities, including the cross-sell of insurance products and portfolio diversification into East Africa and other new market segments, and leverage our modern technology platform for commercial value.
Productivity
To boost productivity we are building on existing efforts to optimise our structure and operating model, as well as leveraging technologies such as AI and intelligent hyperautomation.
Risk and capital management
Our world-class risk management capabilities ensure we balance risk and reward appropriately. Our CLR will be managed within our through-the-cycle target range of 60 bps to 100 bps, while capital levels will remain strong, supporting future growth.
We have set ambitious medium-term targets
In the short term, we aim for an increase in DHEPS in the low single digits and to achieve an ROE of 15% by the end of 2025. The group's CIR is expected to increase year-on-year.
In the medium term, our ambition remains to progress our ROE to 17%, with our CIR below 54%. In the long term we remain committed to an ROE of 18% or more (around COE plus 3%) and to improve our CIR to below 50%.
Strategic value unlocks
The Nedbank strategy outlines our actions to grow earnings, achieve a higher return on equity (ROE) and lower the cost-to-income ratio (CIR) over time. Our strategy is delivered through 5 strategic value unlocks: digital leadership (DX); market-leading client experiences (CX); areas that create value (strategic portfolio tilt); strategic growth vectors; and creating positive impacts. A skilled workforce supported by our modern technology platform is driving steady execution of our strategy to drive robust revenue growth and productivity enhancements, while we maintain strong risk and capital management metrics. In H1 2025 we initiated a strategic organisational restructure as a catalyst to enhance our focus on clients, drive faster revenue growth and unlock efficiency and productivity enhancements. We also concluded a strategic review of our financial investment in Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI).
Our 5 strategic value unlocks
Digital leadership (DX)
We seek to amplify the digital experience (DX) for our clients and employees by leveraging and commercialising our IT foundations and the investments made over the past few years. An enhanced digital experience increases client satisfaction, digital adoption, and improved client retention.
Market-leading client experiences (CX)
The ability to deliver exceptional client experiences (CX) is a crucial differentiator, supported by a strong competitive brand. Our aspiration is to be Africa’s #1 digital financial services provider by retaining a #1 position among South African banks, thereby enhancing our social capital.
Focusing on areas that create value (SPT)
We focus on areas that create value through our SPT initiative, which is a groupwide strategy focused on growing profitable market share in selected areas through integrated client-led asset and liability client value propositions.
Growth vectors
Nedbank's growth vectors include portfolio diversification, including expansion into East Africa by leveraging our expertise and capabilities in CIB; the launch of a dedicated new offering to transform how mid-sized corporates access financial solutions through our Business and Commercial Banking cluster; unlocking faster growth and cross-sell and upsell of insurance products into our client base, with this supported by modernising payments and leveraging the investments we have made in IT.
Creating positive impacts
For our business to succeed, we need a thriving economy, a well-functioning society, and a healthy environment. We also recognise that sustainability issues play a material role in shaping this system and setting the guardrails to optimise how we operate.
