About the Artist
NT Mbadamana remains a relatively lesser-known figure within South African art history. Unlike many of the country's more extensively documented artists, very little biographical information about Mbadamana has survived or is currently accessible through public archives, galleries or published sources. As a result, details relating to her life, place of birth, training, career and artistic output remain largely unknown. This absence of documentation highlights a broader challenge within South African art history, where many black artists of the twentieth century were insufficiently recorded, researched or represented within institutional archives.
About this Artwork
The limited information available about Mbadamana makes works such as Workers particularly significant, serving not only as artworks in their own right but also as important records of an under-documented artistic practice whose full contribution to South African art history has yet to be fully understood. Workers honours the contribution of labour to South Africa's social and economic development. Depicting a group of workers engaged in collective physical work, the painting emphasises cooperation, resilience and the dignity of labour. By placing workers at the centre of the composition, the artist acknowledges the vital role that generations of labourers have played in building the country's industries, communities and economy, while celebrating the strength and humanity that underpin everyday work.
