About the Artist
Ayanda Mabulu (born 1981) is a South African painter born in Qonce, formerly King William’s Town, in the Eastern Cape. He is self-taught and developed his practice through sustained studio work and engagement with South Africa’s artistic communities rather than formal art school training. Mabulu is known for large-scale figurative paintings that combine satire, allegory and symbolism to address power, inequality, race, colonial history and public accountability. His work has been exhibited in South Africa and internationally, including a 2018 presentation at the DuSable Museum in Chicago.
About this Artwork
The Capture of Supreme Energy depicts a solitary woman emerging from dense vegetation while holding a camera, creating a compelling interplay between observation, knowledge and power. The woman appears as both explorer and observer and shows the challenging gaze between the observer and the observed, which is interpolating dynamic between both the viewer and the individual in the painting.
