After working in Britain and travelling in India and South Africa, he settled permanently in Cape Town in 1915. Goodman became known for landscapes, Cape Dutch architecture, interiors and flower studies. He received a gold medal for pastel drawings at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.
About this Artwork
Roses in a Green Vase is an example of Goodman’s close observation, material presence and the symbolic potential of everyday objects. Goodman frequently painted flowers, gardens and cultivated landscapes, bringing a refined sense of atmosphere to his subjects. Here, the contrast between the vibrant roses and the deep green vase creates invites close attention to the changing effects of light in the painting. His still life paintings are not merely decorative studies of flowers. They reveal an interest in beauty, domestic interiors, collecting culture. They capture a refined vision of everyday life that appealed to collectors then and continues to do so today.
