About the Artist

Alfred ‘Alf’ Gundersen (1926–2007/2009) was a South African painter associated with landscapes and architectural scenes. Although he was not widely popular, it is agreed that his paintings of recognisable people faired quite well among businesses and corporations.

About this Artwork

Perm Bank Building is a commissioned painting for Perm Bank, one of the institutions that later became part of Nedbank through a merger. Here, the painting is an architectural landmark, commemorating the building as it opened. Gunderson's treatment of the building focuses on form and perspective, showing the beauty of the building yet also trapping it in time. The work reflects an interest in the built environment as a record of social and economic development, preserving a particular moment in the history of Nedbank. As both artwork and visual document, the painting demonstrates how architecture contributes to collective memory and institutional identity.
