About the Artist
Clément Edmond Théodore Marie Serneels (1912–1991) was a Belgian-born painter, born in Brussels and trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In 1936 he received a government travel scholarship to the Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo), where he developed an extensive body of portraits, landscapes and still lifes. He later lived near Lake Kivu, travelled and exhibited internationally, and spent periods in South Africa, including successful exhibitions in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Political upheaval in the Congo led him back to Brussels, where he lived until his death.
About this Artwork
Le Pot En Grès centres on a simple arrangement of flowers and pottery, transforming familiar objects into a lyrical study of colour, light and atmosphere. Serneels was known for his ability to elevate everyday subjects through sensitive observation and painterly refinement. The work reflects the artist's enduring interest in still life as a means of exploring beauty, materiality and quiet contemplation.
